About Me
My Job
I administer the Libraries' integrated library system (Voyager) and previously was the Unix system administrator and managed the server side of Voyager.
I also do a fair amount of shell and Perl programming for system and Voyager automation and for web-based applications such as the New Books List and ShelfLister. As I learn more about databases and SQL, I am venturing deeper into that realm. The PkgInfo database is an example.
I have been at the University of Texas at Arlington since 1990. I started out as a science librarian/bibliographer and my public services tenure included a year as acting head of the Science & Engineering Library. In 1998, I transferred over to the Libraries' Information Technology department (now called Library Systems). There's more stuff in my resume.
My Qualifications
I have a Certificate in Unix Administration from the UTA Division of Continuing Education. I have also taken a variety of Sun Education classes and am a Sun Certified System Administrator as well as a Sun Certified Network Administrator.
I completed Endeavor's Voyager certification 300, 400 and 500 classes, and regularly attend, and present at, Voyager/Ex Libris Users Group meetings.
Classroom learning is important, but I have benefited the most from seven years of day-to-day hands-on experience as a system administrator.
