sortLC - Perl utilities for sorting LC call number


Released some Perl utilities (sortLC) for sorting Library of Congress (LC) call numbers.

Discover Oracle-Perl Environment (dope.sh)


Released dope.sh, a shell script utility designed to help determine what different versions of Perl, Oracle, and Perl DBI and DBD::Oracle modules have been installed on a Unix (Solaris) system.

Solaris package information database


A recent hacking experience has provided the impetus for re-examing our Solaris installation procedures. The Solaris package information database helps in identifying the relationships between Solaris packages and clusters and is meant to be used as a tool for planning a minimal Solaris installation.

New WebVoyage "UTA Theses" search


Reference staff have long expressed the desire for a more user-friendly way to search the library catalog for UTA dissertation and thesis records. The UTA Theses search interface searches a file of extracted thesis and disseration records and provides link-backs to the record in the catalog.

South-Central Voyager Users Group Meeting


The South-Central Voyager Users Group Meeting was held in Fort Worth, October 9-11. I did a presentation on the ShelfCheck application.

New Books List 6.0 (the Unicode release)


The New Books List has been retooled for Unicode compatibility. A beta release is available for download.

New Books List now has a Welsh user interface


Thanks to the translation division of the University of Wales Aberystwyth, the New Books List now has a Welsh language module and therefore a Welsh user interface.

Windows port of New Books Released


The New Books List has been ported to Windows and a beta version was released today.

Multilingual version of New Books List released


Version 5.0 has successfully completed beta testing at Mikkeli Polytechnic in Finland and was made available for general release today. Version 5.0 offers a multilingual interface.

Voyager/Access report workshop, Jan 7-9, 2002


Attended Alan Manifold s excellent workshops, "Using Access to Create Reports from Voyager" and "Beware of the Blob." I m not quite ready to call myself a Blob-master, but I sure know a heck of a lot more than I did.

Appointed to Voyager enhancement group


My involvement in the Voyager community has moved to the next level. I volunteered for, and have been appointed to, a two year term on the Technical group of the enhancement committee.

"These groups work closely with each other and with Endeavor to review enhancement requests, to analyze them for themes, to draw up problem statements that describe broad areas that need to be addressed, then to prioritize these statements as guidance to Endeavor s development plans."

New Books List version 3.3 released


Version 3.3 renders diacritics! This is a first step towards internationalizing the New Books List. USMARC, FinMARC and MARC21-fin character sets are converted to Latin 1 (the Unicode base). Other changes accommodate non-USMARC conventions for ISBNs.

South Central VUGM, Oct. 3-5


I'll be attending the South Central VUGM (Voyager Users Group Meeting) in Ardmore, Oklahoma from October 3-5. I'll be doing a session on Unix sysadmin for newbies.

Site map added


As the amount of content of interest to the Voyager community has increased on this site, I thought that navigation might be improved with a site map. The redesign process provided the opportune time to create one, so here it is!

Redesign of site per University style guide


This site was redesigned to conform to guidelines on design elements and required content for official University web sites. Although the guidelines do not apply to the personal pages of staff and faculty, they can be easily incorporated. Plus, the graphics and color recommendations were a great help to this aesthetically-challenged Unix system administrator. See the UTA Web Style Guide for more information.

New Books List pages updated


The New Books List pages have been updated to include FAQ's and a user list. Version 3.2 of the program is now available. This is a minor version change that fixes some bugs.

MARC.pm and Prebulk tutorial added to site


UTA Libraries used Perl s MARC.pm module and Voyager s Prebulk program to batch edit a file of bibliographic records prior to loading into the Voyager database. Our efforts have been documented in a new Voyager tutorial entitled MARC.pm and Prebulk.

The new and improved version 3.1 of the New Books List was released to the Voyager community on May 29.

VUGM sessions past and future


I just got back from VUGM 2001 in Chicago. The SSL on Apache session seemed to go OK. I am considering doing a session at the South Central VUGM in October. Two possibilites are a newbie Unix sysadmin session or a session on setting up the New Books List.

Version 3.0 of New Books List in beta


The New Books List program has been redesigned to mimic the functionality as well as the look and feel of WebVoyage. It is also being rewritten to make it much easier for non-programmers to install. Release of the new version is anticipated for shortly after VUGM 2001.

Endeavor Information Systems has selected UTA Libraries' New Books List to be the subject of a Voyager Success Story. It will be featured on Endeavor's corporate web site and will be included in material given to prospective Voyager libraries. Cascading Style Sheets make an appearance


Labor Day was so darn hot -- 110+ degrees fahrenheit -- that I decided to stay inside and learn some new DHTML. I had recently bought the Lie and Bos book, Cascading Style Sheets: Designing for the Web, so I spent the day adding a rudimentary style sheet to this site.

Version 2.0 of New Books List is available


The New Books List programs have been upgraded. New features include:
1) Sorting by author, title, or call number,
2) Choice of one to four weeks worth of items,
3) Keyword searching of author and title fields, and
4) Searching by call number.
