You'll never have enough time to do the fun sysadmin stuff until you start automating the routine system tasks. Although this requires an initial investment of time and effort to learn shell programming, the payoff is huge.
Automating tasks story #1
I recently asked another system administrator to describe a typical day at work. He replied that he started each day by doing a patron load into his library's ILMS and that it took him about an hour. Hmmm, let's do the math: 1 hour a day x 5 days a week x 50 weeks a year = 250 hours, or over 6 weeks of every year. Holy Bourne shell, Batman, time to automate!
